Community Ownership

As a business owner, I've experienced firsthand the challenges of finding, securing, and financing spaces to operate. This struggle ignited my passion for community ownership of spaces—a belief that our neighbourhoods thrive when vital assets remain in the hands of the community.

Four years ago, I joined the Platform Places project to actively contribute to this mission. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to supporting the community in preserving valuable assets and ensuring they remain in the hands of the people who rely on them.

12th November 2024

I organised a community meeting, with guest speakers: David from Actone Cinema, Christo from Star and Shadow Cinema, Daniel Monaghan from the Co-operative Party, Gabriel from Jan Kattien Architects, Brendan Conway from Earlsfield Community Land Trust and supported by Cllr Carole Williams,

The meeting focused on community ownership processes with examples from  other organisations who shared insights and experiences delivering similar projects. Discussions covered the importance of community ownership, practical steps for acquiring and operating community assets, and examples of successful community-run cinemas. The meeting also addressed challenges faced by community projects, potential funding sources, and the significance of building relationships with Local Authorities to support such initiatives.
