Justice(s) in the Old Bailey

I had the unique opportunity to visit the Old Bailey as a guest of Alderman and Sheriff Gregory Jones KC, for lunch. As one of the two Sheriffs of the City of London, Sheriff Jones plays a key role in supporting the Lord Mayor and upholding the rule of law. The Sheriffs also have ceremonial duties and responsibilities relating to the City’s Central Criminal Court, where some of the most serious criminal cases in the UK are tried.

During my visit, I engaged in meaningful conversations with the other 7 judges working within the justice system and the High commissioner of Canada. We discussed the increasing concern around youth involvement in crime and the growing number of young people who are unfortunately losing their liberties as a result. These discussions offered important insights into the challenges the justice system faces and the need for preventative community work.

I took that opportunity to tell them all about the work Be Enriched does to do just this, showing young people another way that is legal.

A highlight of the day was observing a live court case. It was my first time inside a courtroom, and watching the proceedings firsthand helped me better understand the legal process and court procedures. This experience reinforced the importance of early intervention and community support in preventing crime and supporting young people at risk.

Lunch was also very good!
