Here's a few things your councillor has been doing in Tooting and across Wandsworth this last month.
Tooting flourishes due to our diversity and Migrants - We even placed a blue plaque on the Market to this effect. This month I chaired our Migration forum made up of VCS who support our Sanctuary seekers - we are looking for migrants with experience to join it. Putney MP Fleur Anderson held a reception at Parliament for all of these groups to express her gratitude.
Councillor advice sessions are held every Saturday at Tooting Library 11-12 and we take it in turns. This month it was my turn to speak to residents. For many of our residents English is a second language so I was happy to be able to refer them to our new refugee team, who speak 21 different languages between them, so they can communicate issues in their first language.
I support the businesses across the borough so I was happy to welcome the GLA to Wandsworth and show them some of the ways we support businesses with our improvements to the public realm or pubic spaces.
Talking about improvements I had a great day with the Tooting Transition Town group and 50 other local residents in the immersive 'Town Anywhere' in Samaj Hall. We spent the day imagining a different more equitable future. And then built it!
Black History Month celebrations ended with
A talk featuring Kwame Kwei-Armah, Black British writer, actors and director, at the US Embassy
and finally a panel discussion was held by our Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan in the Mayors living room in Newham with David Olusoga, Melissa Sigodo, Big Manny and Shani Akilah. .
I've also been doing my day job and writing about local governments around the world, but more on this soon.
All for now!
